I decided to add a “What’s in Season: Texas Edition” to the blog so our readers could find a reliable source of seasonal Texas produce each month. If you’re like me, you grew up eating locally grown fruits and vegetables from the local farmer’s market. Yes, before it was cool. Back then, you only had access to seasonal produce. However, if you didn’t grow up like me, you probably find yourself puzzled when people start throwing around these phrases, “sustainable”, “seasonal”, “locally grown”, and “farm to table”. Ok, so now you’re probably wondering, “What’s the big deal? I can get most of those things year-round. That’s just a trendy way restaurants jack up prices.” Actually, you save money by eating local and it’s healthier for your diet as well. Eating foods when they are in season doesn’t get any simpler and it’s not a trend, people used to do it all the time. You go to the store, buy your produce that was grown and harvested at the time of year when you purchased it and cooked it. This is great for the environment and your local farmers. When you’re buying seasonal veggies you’re buying during the “peak of its supply.” This drastically reduces the cost of delivering the goods from the farmers and distributors to the grocery stores. Eating produce that is in season also ensures you’re eating food at the peak of its freshness. You don’t have to worry about what’s pumped into it so that it survives shipping, what was used to germinate and cultivate a crop that ordinarily doesn’t bloom at this time of year, and certainly the taste of fresh produce at the height of its season is unmatched any other time of the year.
Eating seasonal produce also helps to diversify your diet. Eating locally sourced seasonal produce at the peak of freshness not only provides the best taste but the most nutrient-rich and nutrient dense fruits and vegetables making them healthier for you by default. Out of season produce usually has to be picked before it is mature just so it can survive shipping in hopes that it will mature en route. I would assume that without the source providing the necessary nutrients needed for the fruit or vegetable to continue growing during shipping, you’ve stunted the health benefits available that you would ordinarily receive during consumption if the produce were picked fresh.
Lastly, warm fuzzies. When you buy locally you’re supporting your local farmers and other business owners in your community! Shopping locally helps keep your local farmers sustainable and circulates commerce in the community ensuring you will continuously be able to find locally grown and locally sourced products in your stores.
